Visit the Historic Sights in West Barnstable
One of the key places to visit for history buffs in West Barnstable is St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and Cemetery is a historic church and cemetery in Newton Lower Falls. St. Mary’s Parish was formed in 1811, but the church, built in 1813-14 and restyled in 1838, is the oldest church in Newton and a fine example of Gothic Revival/Federal style architecture. The cemetery, which dates from 1812, is the oldest non-government-owned cemetery in Newton. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, which makes it a local hotspot for history buffs.
Another famous colonial building in West Barnstable is the Old Jail. This building is a historical colonial jail that was built in 1960, making it the oldest wooden jail in the United States. The jail was built by order of the Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay Colony courts. It served as the Barnstable County jail until 1820, when a new stone jail was built. The structure, which held about six prisoners, was eventually attached to a barn. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and included in the Old King’s Highway Historic District in 1987. The jailhouse is considered one of the most haunted in America and is open to ghost tours at certain times of the year. It is believed to be haunted by Goody Hallett, who is said to also haunt the Whydah Pirate Museum in Provincetown, as well as Lucifer Land (also called Goody Hallett’s Meadow) which is a reference to the area of land at the top of the Wellfleet cliffs.
Finally, guests frequent the Korean War Monument. The memorial commemorates the Massachusetts men who lost their lives in the Korean War. Its dominant feature is an over-life-size bronze soldier wearing rain gear and depicted as moving forward with his rifle at the ready. The memorial incorporates plaques and other features listing the fallen and the battles in which they fought. The soldier stands on a stone brought from Korea giving the memorial its further significance as a symbol of the friendship between the Republic of South Korea and the United States of America. The memorial was commissioned by the Massachusetts Korean War Veterans Committee, and created by the sculptors, Robert Shure and Moise Altshuler. Located in the Charlestown Navy Yard, it was dedicated in 1993.
