The Cape Cod Canal is a long, wide channel that physically separates the Cape from the mainland. To drive to Cape Cod, you have to cross the canal by either the Bourne Bridge or the Sagamore Bridge. therefore, the canal is the first landmark you see when arriving on Cape Cod, and the last you see when leaving.
