Family and History

Eastham is a family oriented town, the type of place you can bring your kids and know that there is plenty to do to keep them busy and happy. Rent bikes for the entire family at Idle Times Bike Rentals, found at 4550 Route 6 North, and enjoy a leisurely ride along the Cape Cod Rail Trail, then treat your children to Nauset Ice Cream after to celebrate their success at keeping up with the family.

All towns on Cape Cod have a rich and vibrant history, and Eastham is no exception; the aforementioned Eastham Windmill was built in 1680 in Plymouth, moved to Truro in 1770, and moved once more to the spot where it stands now in 1793. Serving as a testament to the craftmanship of our ancestors, this historic structure is just one of many historical architectural wonders that can be found in this charming village.

Spend some time visiting shops such as the Gift Barn, Inc, located at 4180A State Highway North, or Buddha & Beads at 2390 State Highway, where you will find sweet souvenirs to bring back to your friends and family.

Eastham Lighthouses

If there’s one thing that Eastham is truly known for more so than anything else, it’s beautiful lighthouses. With its location right on the water, Eastham has a long history and legacy of lighthouses that have kept thousands of sailors safe, and now you can explore for yourself!

For example, you can check out the legendary Three Sisters Lighthouses. Although only two of the 22-foot-high wooden lighthouse towers remain, they can be visited. These lighthouses gained the nickname because, from the sea, they appeared to look like women in white dresses and black hats. Built almost two centuries ago, these lighthouses have been restored, and the owners invite you to come by and learn about their magnificent history!

Or if you’re looking for something a little more classic, you can check out Nauset Light from May to October, when free tours are offered of the legendary lighthouse. Does this lighthouse look familiar? You may recognize it’s likeness from the Cape Cod Potato Chip bag! If you’re a fan of the history and beauty that lighthouses can bring, then Eastham is the perfect place to stay.

FAQs About Eastham Vacation Rentals

Q: What makes Eastham such a great vacation destination?

A: The town of Eastham is known as the Gateway to the National Seashore as more than one-third of the town is in the boundaries of the Cape Cod National Seashore, created in August of 1961 by President John F. Kennedy.
We love the beach but want to spend some quality time at home in our vacation rental with our family. What type of amenities do your Eastham rentals offer that will allow us to do so?

The beauty of choosing a New England Vacation Rentals escape anywhere on Cape Cod is knowing that we have put a lot of thought into making our homes comfortable, relaxing, and fun. Our Eastham properties will offer a variety of family friendly amenities, including fire pits, charcoal grills, even hammocks strung between two trees, to be utilized by guests for the most restful of naps. Some may even provide pool or other types of game tables, giving family many hours of fun at home.

Q: Did we actually see a windmill when we were driving into town?

A: The Eastham Windmill is the oldest one on Cape Cod, having been constructed in 1680, and it was the last working gristmill as well. The weekend after Labor Day is called Windmill Weekend and features a three-day celebration with food, music, craft booths, a parade, and more.

Q: Why do so many New England Vacation Rentals offer outdoor showers?

A: If the home you chose has an outdoor shower it means there is a beach nearby. There is nothing New Englanders dislike more than sand being tracked into the house and these outdoor showers allow guests to wash away the tiny granules, keeping the sand outdoors where it belongs!
