While in the past, beer was regarded as a blue collar drink, today’s craft breweries have brought a new respect to what was once just a way to cap off a really bad day at work. Beer aficionados carry their own “growlers” that can be refilled at “growler stations” and toss words like IPA, stout, and lager around. Suddenly, its hip to love beer and wine has become yesterday’s news.
Beer on Cape Cod and the Islands, however, has never gone out of style; nothing tastes better than a cold beer on a hot summer’s day while relaxing in boats and on beaches, and Cape Cod has maintained a select few breweries that far outshine the competitors in the bigger cities. We’re Cape Cod, we do EVERYTHING better here! Keep reading for a list of local Cape Cod breweries where you can wet your whistle with beers named Lizard Mouth, Arrogant Bastard, and more.
Devil’s Purse Brewery
Newer to the Cape Cod brewery scene, Devil’s Purse located in Dennis certainly gives the old pros a run for their money! Their brewery is located at 120 Great Western Road in South Dennis and is open to the public for tastings and purchases. When you stop in, be sure to try their Intertidal Oyster Stout; brewed with REAL local oysters?
Cape Cod Beer
Vacation begins with the very first sip of the local brews served here! Serving delicious craft beers with names like Cape Cod Beach Blonde and Stargazer Stout, your vacation will be much improved on if you drop into this local fave that has been in business since 2004. Offering tours of the brewery and free beer tastings during retail hours, we heartily recommend Cape Cod Brewery, located at 1336 Phinney’s Lane in Hyannis.
Hog Island Beer Company
We have to admit, a large part of the joy in Cape Cod craft beers comes from being able to enjoy something locally made in our own backyard. What’s even more fun is enjoying it in what feels like a backyard at brewery! Hog Island Beer Company, one of the unique breweries on Cape Cod, located with the Jailhouse Tavern in Orleans offers up plenty of food from full meals in the restaurant to light snacks in the brewery to enjoy with beer flights. Not to mention they have game tables and often live music, but best of all is the grassy courtyard with lawn games, picnic tables, and Adirondack chairs where you can kick back and chill with a beer. We raise our glasses to toast this hopping Cape Cod brewery–Get it HOPping? We crack ourselves up, sometimes! Located at 28 West Road in Orleans.
Bad Martha’s Farmer Brewery – Martha’s Vineyard
We’re not really sure which we like more: the tasty craft beers served frosty cold, or the legend told about the original Bad Martha. Both are equally wonderful and we recommend you check out their website to learn more about this flirtatious establishment located at 270 Upper Main Street in Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard. And when you stop in, be sure and try their Island IPA; with hints of tangerine and other tropical essences, this delicious brew helps keep the island spirit intact!
Offshore Ale Company – Martha’s Vineyard
We have to admit, a large part of the joy in craft beers comes from the crazy names bestowed on the frosty brews, and the beverages offered at Offshore Ale Company, one of the unique breweries in Cape Cod, are no exception to the rule, especially their winter beer, Miss Behavin’! Offering a 5-course Beer Dinner Series that pairs their best brews with delicious meals, live Jazz music on Tuesdays, and a brew house breakfast on weekends, we raise our glasses in toast to this hopping Cape Cod brewery! (Get it? hopping? We crack ourselves up, sometimes!) Located at 30 Kennebec Ave, Oak Bluffs.
Cisco Brewers – Nantucket
Cisco Brewers is the only brewery on Nantucket. It is not only a brewery but also a distillery, and a winery. We think it is one of the most fun places we’ve been to. Folks line up early to get tickets. As you enter there are food stations and trucks and then buildings featuring beer, wine and spirits. Tasting is available, along with buying a glass of your choice. Everything including t-shirts and other clothing items are for sale too. Take the afternoon get your favorite drink, snack or meal, sit down and enjoy the music from local musicians that are playing. We love watching all the kids dance! All are welcome, even your dog. It’s located at 5 Bartlett Farm Rd — a little out of the town center, but there is a free shuttle that continuously runs back and forth all day.
