Nestled within Barnstable, Massachusetts, the Coast Guard Heritage and Donald G. Trayser Memorial Museum allows visitors to get a glimpse of the storied maritime history of Cape Cod. The museum is housed within a historic building formerly known as the U.S. Customshouse, which operated as a custom house and post office from its establishment by famed federal architect Ammi Young in 1855 until 1913 and a post office until 1958. In 2005, two former members of the United States Navy began operating the museum and expanding its collection.
The Coast Guard Heritage Museum is part of the Cape Cod Museum Trail. The Coast Guard Museum Cape Cod seeks to preserve the history of the Coast Guard from its beginnings in the 1790s through the present day through two floors of artifacts and exhibits, ranging from weapons and uniforms to classic rescue equipment and vintage Coast Guard ships. It also showcases the important role of the building in Cape Cod’s maritime commerce during the nineteenth century.
