Vacations are often filled with activities that are designed for children to enjoy: trips to theme parks, water parks, or children’s museums where activities are geared to the younger set. Some other vacations are spent visiting art museums, taking in Broadway shows, or festivals that feature cocktails and spicy foods that only adults can stomach. A trip to Cape Cod and the Whydah Pirate Museum aims to change that. Every young child has dreamed of being a pirate at some stage in their life, and every adult has dreamed of finding the pirate’s booty and retiring from stressful jobs to live a life of luxury, and this Cape Cod pirate museum matches the needs and interests of both groups!
An 18th Century Slave Cargo Ship
The Whydah was a slave ship captured by pirates in 1710, and the Whydah Pirate Museum is dedicated to telling its story. Containing real pirate equipment, including swords, pistols, canons, and genuine pirate booty—gold and silver coins dredged from the wreckage of the Whydah, courtesy of Barry Clifford, treasure hunter extraordinaire—this Cape Cod pirate museum is unlike most in that its patrons are invited to interact with the exhibits and can even touch the treasures found inside. Climb aboard a replica of the Whydah and experience what life on the seas was like 300 years ago and let your imagination go wild; the real Whydah was lost at sea in a horrible storm in 1717, right off the coast of Cape Cod, but this authentic recreation will live forever.
