Brooks Academy Museum
Cape Cod is a region rich in history, but you don’t have to be a self-proclaimed history buff to find intrigue in its storied past. One of the best parts about visiting the peninsula is learning all about the area and each of the amicable communities that make up the seaside territory in the abundant museums on Cape Cod. Whether you are staying in Harwich or just making a day trip, you’ll want to check out Brooks Academy Museum. This is where you’ll find everything you wanted to know about Harwich history and get a glimpse into the town’s evolution into what it is today. It is located in the Harwich Historic District, which is proud to be Cape Cod’s first historic district recognized by the National Register of Historic Places.
Visiting Brooks Academy Museum
The building that now houses the Brooks Academy Museum was built in 1844 as the Pine Grove Seminary – a two-room co-ed school run by Sidney Brooks. It now hosts the Harwich Historical Society, which is committed to preserving, collecting, and interpreting the history of the quaint town. The organization has successfully educated numerous residents and visitors through varied programs and exhibits. The museum on Cape Cod has a collection spanning two centuries of Harwich history, anchored by an extensive presentation on the prevalent cranberry culture on Cape Cod.
Additional displays cover the community’s railroad and maritime histories and include an assortment of clothing and textiles, art, tools, and historical paper documents. There are also rotating exhibits throughout the year. One of the newest highlights on the grounds is the Elmer Crowell Barn. This was reconstructed to tell the story of the acclaimed Harwich bird carver and feature his workshop. Bird-carving demonstrations are held inside, and displayed are different tools, audiovisuals, and photographs.
