The historic art of glass blowing is one that is still popular today. There is something special about colorful treasures formed with molten glass into products that are working pieces of art. In many of our travels, we have brought home Christmas ornaments, drinking glasses, and wine goblets, but there is so much more available. Some of the more beautiful and historic pieces are featured at the Sandwich Glass Museum.

Sandwich was home to many early glass companies that specialized in blown and cut glass, and even after those closed, glass shops found a new way to create art with the broken pieces of glass left over—by making jewelry! Today, glass pieces salvaged from the beach are turned into beautiful and wearable pieces of art, many of which are available in the museum’s gift shop!

The Exhibits

Featuring a collection that is over 6000 items strong, the glass artworks on exhibit in this Cape Cod glass museum are examples of pieces that were offered for sale at the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company, a local business that was open from 1825 to 1888. Candle holders, drinking glasses, wine goblets, vases, even perfume jars and other decorative items, both blown and cut, are on display, each more colorful and appealing than the next. Glass blowing demonstrations are offered, and during each demonstration, an audience member is chosen to be the glass blower’s “apprentice,” allowing that lucky person the opportunity to get a feel of the craft.

The Museum Shop

Offering reproduction pieces from the museum, exquisite handmade jewelry pieces, books, and other pieces of glass art that are literally begging you to take them home with you, the gift shop is almost as fun as the Sandwich, MA glass museum itself! Periodically, they offer glass art pieces designed by local artists; currently, they have an ocean wave marble and stand created by Cape Cod artist, Billy Mayer, and yes, the museum has a marble display as well! Early marbles were works of hand crafted works of glass art and it is fascinating to see the changes throughout the decades.
