Although we love our wonderful island life, we have managed to do quite a bit of traveling over the years, and one of our favorite things to do, in whatever city we venture to, is visit the local natural history museums and compare them to ours right here in Cape Cod! We’ve visited large ones, small ones, and medium sized ones from all over the world, and while they all have their merits, there is just something special and unique about the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster, MA. Maybe we’re biased, but the three-pronged mission of our museum shows a genuine compassion and caring towards nature and its creatures. Focusing on preserving, exhibiting, and educating, CCMONH is a wonderful place to explore during your Cape Cod adventure.

The Museum and Its Surroundings

Located in a 17,000-square foot building that is set upon 300 acres of conservation land, this Cape Cod natural history museum has come a long way from its early days when it was set up on a tent on 80 acres of salt marsh.

The exhibits include everything from archaeology to the birds and the bees—the birds being a collection of stuffed birds donated to the museum by a local benefactor, and the bees being a display of bees and their hives; our world depends on the continued existence of these stinging creatures, and our Cape Cod natural history museum does it part in protecting their fragile ecosystem. The Butterfly House, which re-opens on June 1st, is another live exhibit dedicated to prolonging the lives of these prolific pollinators, and is a favorite among the younger generations. And finally, the People of the Land: The Wampanoag is a display of artifacts that explore how the original natives survived this hostile climate long before the pilgrims stepped foot on Plymouth Rock.

These exhibits and so many others are both educational and entertaining for all ages. A gift shop located inside the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History offers guests the chance to bring a little bit of Cape Cod history home with them. It’s our second favorite part of the museum!
